Mehr als sechs Jahrzehnte wurde die karibische Insel Vieques von der US-Navy dazu benutzt, um sich auf jeden möglichen Krieg vorzubereiten. Das Pentagon vermietete zudem Teile der Insel an ausländische Partner, unter anderem an Armeen südamerikanischer Despoten. Die Bundeswehr durfte hier zum ersten Mal Uranmunition einsetzen.
Bereits nach ein paar Jahren waren weite Teile der Insel zerstört und kahl.
Filmautor Max M. Mönch begibt sich auf Spurensuche. Die Geschichte beginnt im Paradies, in einem kleinen Fischerdorf am Meer. In mehreren miteinander verwobenen Geschichten kommt ein unfassbarer Umweltskandal ans Licht. Die Bildwelt bleibt die des Paradieses, doch je mehr deutlich wird, was hier über mehrere Jahrzehnte vorgefallen ist, und welche Folgen das für die Bewohner hat, desto grausiger wird dieser Ort.
Vieques ist offenbar einem “Verbrechen” zum Opfer gefallen. Die Spuren sind, auch zehn Jahre nach Abzug der US Army, unübersehbar – in jeder Familie und auf jedem Quadratmeter.
Max M. Mönch gewann mit diesem Stoff 2013 den ersten Preis beim vom Bayerischen Rundfunk und von Global Screen ausgelobten Dokuwettbewerb.
